Home workouts and exercise

I will always advocate moving your body. Firstly for the physical benefits that we are all aware of such as reducing risk of health conditions, improving fitness, muscle mass, strength, functionality and mobility for day to day life.

Secondly for the mental benefits as moving your body in whichever way you choose will almost always make you feel better, boost endorphins, feel energised and give you a sense of achievement.

There are many forms of exercise that suit different people at different times, you might be trying to improve strength, improve fitness, recovering form injury, trying to lose weight, training for an event or improving flexibility and mobility.

There is no right or wrong way to exercise (unless you are an athlete or training for a particular goal of course)

It’s really great that there’s such a vast amount of content, inspiration, and community for home workouts and exercise at the moment, but if you are just getting into exercise, PLEASE take it slowly..! Suddenly trying to do a HIIT workout everyday (or more as I have heard!) could mean you get an injury, feel burnt out after a week, or add more stress to an already stressful time. Please take it slowly, take time to learn new techniques, learn the correct form and make sure you recover. Be aware that not all workout videos are going to take account of your fitness levels or be suitable for you.

In the current lockdown, although I would encourage you to move and exercise, please move in a way that is right for you and in a way you enjoy each day, and do not feel pressured to do certain types of exercise, because someone else if doing it or because you will apparently leave isolation with abs and thighs 4 inches smaller!

By all means try something new, but if you don’t enjoy HIIT (for example), or are not used to this type of exercise don’t do it! Do yoga, or slower strength-based exercise, or a good walk or jog.

You are also not lazy if you don’t complete a proper ‘workout’ everyday either - we all need rest days, and we are all dealing with the current situation in different ways, so just go out for a gentle walk and some fresh air.
